At Stretch Cleaning, we have been providing water damage cleanup in Long Beach Island for over 20 years. As a result, we have come to learn what some of the most common culprits of water damage are in your home, and we want to share that with you so you can be better prepared to identify and even possibly prevent water damage from occurring in the first place.
Blocked and clogged drains. Any time water flow is impeded, it can cause that water to back up into your home. Slow drainage is often an early sign of a clog, so be sure to act as soon as you notice slow draining water. Shower and tub drains, sinks, and toilets are common places where clogs occur and result in water damage. Try to clean out drains periodically to reduce build up and prevent blockages from occurring. Also, be sure to only flush toilet paper (and small amounts) down the toilet.
Leaky pipes. Leaky pipes are one of the most common causes of water damage cleanup in homes. Pipes commonly leak at junctions or connections that have become loose, or turns and bends that have started to form build up inside. Unfortunately, corrosion and build up occurs in pipes over time which weakens their structural integrity. If water pressure rises too high inside the pipes, those weakened areas are susceptible to bursting, allowing water to leak out in order to reduce the pressure. Some common causes of increased pressure in pipes are:
Frozen pipes – when water inside pipes freezes, it expands and puts extra pressure on the pipes walls. This is rare in the Long Beach Island area, but not unheard of.
High water pressure going into your home – a water pressure gauge can be installed on any exterior faucet that can monitor the pressure going into your home. Water pressure should stay between 60 and 70 psi, any higher and your pipes are at an increased risk of bursting.
Too much rust and corrosion build up
Household appliances. Common household appliances like dishwashers, washing machines, and hot water heaters all use gallons of water each and every day. The hoses and plumbing that supply these machines with the water, and allow that water to drain, can leak, become disconnected, or get clogged. It is important to make sure that water hoses are checked regularly to ensure their connections are tight and secure and there are no leaks. It is also important to follow manufacturer’s guidelines for correct use and maintenance to keep these machines functioning properly.
